a question about The Final Four Trilogy Look What Happened In A Tournament We Played Most of you know that we are constantly playing our games. We are always fine-tuning and finding ways to make it more fun and accurate for you. This tournament was so amazingly exciting that we wanted to share the Final Four with you. This tournament was played using the 64 Final Four Trilogy Teams in Installment II (1973-74 thru 1988-89).
National Semi-Final
#1 Each of these teams faced brutal matchups to get to the National Semi-Final. Virginia beat Duke [1978] (Mike GMINSKI), Villanova [1985] (Ed PINCKNEY), DePaul [1979] (Mark AGUIRRE) and Louisville [1986] (Billy THOMPSON). The DePaul game was particularly exciting. Jeff JONES made an incredible steal with less than 20 seconds left, with Virginia up by 1. But, he threw it away, giving the Blue Demons life. Mark AGUIRRE drove the lane with time expiring and threw up a 10-footer for the win for DePaul. But, it was ruled that the shot came after the buzzer and Virginia survived and advanced. North Carolina State defeated LSU [1986] (John WILLIAMS), UNC-Charlotte [1977] (Cornbread MAXWELL), Michigan [1976] (Rickey GREEN & Phil HUBBARD) and Georgetown [1984] (5 NBA players on that team, including Patrick EWING) to reach The Final Four.
In the semi-final, North Carolina State
[1974] started strong and took a 15 point lead into intermission.
Virginia [1981] fought back in the second half, but the rally fell short
and State won by 6. David THOMPSON had 23 points and 5 steals before
fouling out late in the game. Young Ralph SAMPSON had 15 and 2 blocks in
defeat. double-click on the thumbnails for larger images.
National Semi-Final
#2 What an amazing matchup! Larry BIRD and a bunch of guys you'd never hear from again against the undefeated Hoosiers, with Scott MAY, Kent BENSON, Quinn BUCKNER and more. The Sycamores reached the Final Four by downing UCLA [1980] (They won by 2 in overtime, after BIRD fouled out. What a first round game!), Kentucky [1984] (Sam BOWIE & Melvin TURPIN), UNLV [1977] (The highest scoring team in the tournament) and Memphis State [1985] (They won by 1 when Keith LEE missed at the buzzer). One shot made here or there at various points in this tournament would have sent Indiana State home early. But, this is the way tournaments work and the Sycamores survived.
Indiana had one close call (beating
Oklahoma [1988] by 2 in the 3rd round) on their way to The Final Four.
They also beat Iowa [1980] (Ronnie LESTER), UCLA [1976] (Richard
WASHINGTON & Marques JOHNSON) and St. John's [1985] (Chris MULLIN).
National
Championship Game
Scott MAY started where he left off in the
semi-final, scoring 16 points in the first half to give Indiana a 13
point lead. The Hoosiers shot 50% from the field in the first half, had
7 steals and only 3 turnovers, while holding the Wolfpack to 35% from
the floor. David THOMPSON was held in check, shooting only 2-7, with 5
points.
THOMPSON and Tommy BURLESON came alive in
the second half, totally dominating the game. North Carolina State
scored 44 points, while holding the Hoosiers to only 23. THOMPSON and
BURLESON each played every minute in the second half, scoring 15 and 12
points, respectively. Scott MAY, who had dominated the tournament, was
held to 3 for 7 by the stifling Wolfpack D. This one stat says it all:
in the second half, North Carolina State outrebounded Indiana 22-7.
This National Championship Game featured two of the very best College Basketball teams ever (UCLA fans don't get upset, please :)) While UCLA had several teams in this Trilogy Installment II, most of their All-Time best teams are in Installment III, featuring Final Four Teams from pre-1973. College Basketball Is Very Unpredictable Will your tournament be this exciting? We don't know, but there is a good chance. Just like Real-Life, when you throw the ball on the floor with Cactus League College Basketball, you never know what might happen! And, who knows? Your coaching could make the difference! The
Cactus League College Basketball Final Four Trilogy is available now.
